New Zealand ruling party would end alliance with US
New Zealand's ruling Labour Party approved nonbinding resolutions Sunday calling on the government of Prime Minister David Lange to withdraw from the ANZUS defense alliance with the United States and shut down a US Air Force base.
The resolutions are unlikely to find their way into the government policy of Mr. Lange. Lange campaigned on a pledge to ban nuclear warships from New Zealand ports and to renegotiate its ANZUS defense treaty with the US and Australia.
