Plan to end funding of church given to Italian Parliament

A joint government-church commission submitted a proposal to Parliament yesterday to phase out state funding of the Roman Catholic Church in Italy by 1990, leaving the church dependent on contributions. The state would allow deductions from individual income taxes to stimulate giving.
