Romanian athletes will be safe in L.A., official says

The top Olympic official of Romania, the only Eastern-bloc nation to break with the Soviet Olympic boycott, praised security and other preparations for the upcoming summer games.

''We feel assured that security will be guaranteed,'' Haralambie Alexa, president of the Romanian National Olympic Committee, said at a news conference Friday. The 14 nations joining in the boycott have said their decision was based on fears of inadequate security and anti-Soviet hysteria in the United States.

''I'd like you to know that there have been no pressures on us. Each Olympic committee was allowed to decide independently, and we've made our own decision to come,'' he said.
