Angolan rebels seize Americans in attack
Anticommunist rebels fighting the Marxist government of Angola seized an unspecified number of Americans during attacks that killed 370 government and Cuban troops, the guerrillas said Thursday.
Rebel forces ''captured 11 foreigners of American, Portuguese, and Colombian nationality'' in an attack Tuesday on the key highway junction of Quibala, in the south of the former Portuguese colony, said a statement from the pro-Western National Union for Angola's Total Independence, known as UNITA.
At the State Department in Washington, a spokesman said: ''There seems to be a mixed bag of people swept up in an attack. We don't know who or how many.'' Washington has no diplomatic ties with the Marxist government in Luanda.
