Smithsonian museum sets April record for visitors

Visitors toured Smithsonian Institution museums in record numbers in April, with the National Air and Space Museum - the most popular in the country - smashing its previous record for attendance on a single day. Nearly 3,664,000 people visited Smithsonian exhibits last month, a 15 percent increase over April of 1983. The space museum alone accounted for 1,607,820 of them.

Since it opened in 1976, the space museum has regularly accounted for nearly 50 percent of all Smithsonian attendance.
