US Mideast envoy resigns; no replacement is planned

Donald Rumsfeld hs resigend as special US envoy to the Middle East to return to business and will not be replaced by President Reagan, the White House announced Friday.

Spokesman Larry Speakes said Mr. Reagan would not name a ne special envoy but instead would rely on US diplomats serving in the Middle East to continue the search for an Arab-Israeli peace settlement.

Mr. Rumsfeld said in his resignation letter to Reagan that he was returning to his job as president of G.D. Serle, the Chicago-based pharmaceutical company.
