Taiwan hails 'tough stand' by Reagan on mainland
The Taiwan government welcomed Monday what it called the tough stand on US commitments to the Nationalist island taken by President Reagan during his talks in Peking.
''By taking a tough stand against the Chinese Communists, President Reagan has shown that he is a man of his word who will not turn his back on old friends ,'' said a Foreign Ministry official who asked not to be identified.
Political analysts here said Reagan's pledge to continue arms sales to Taiwan was reassuring for the Nationalists, who are concerned about military modernization on the mainland and what they see as the possibility of a Communist invasion.
