Providence mayor resigns after probation sentence
Mayor Vincent A. Cianci Jr. resigned, effective today, after being sentenced to probation for beating a man he thought was having an affair with his estranged wife.
As the city reeled from the resignation of its popular mayor, state troopers stood guard over documents in a corruption investigation at City Hall Tuesday.
Police Chief Anthony J. Mancuso refused to obey an order from Public Safety Commissioner Sanford H. Gorodetsky to step down. Mr. Gorodetsky accused Mr. Mancuso of undermining him during an investigation into alleged corruption in the public-works department.
At a news conference late Monday night, Mancuso said he arranged for state police to ''protect the integrity'' of all documents pertaining to the investigation.
