Providence mayor resigns after probation sentence

Mayor Vincent A. Cianci Jr. resigned, effective today, after being sentenced to probation for beating a man he thought was having an affair with his estranged wife.

As the city reeled from the resignation of its popular mayor, state troopers stood guard over documents in a corruption investigation at City Hall Tuesday.

At a news conference late Monday night, Mancuso said he arranged for state police to ''protect the integrity'' of all documents pertaining to the investigation.
