Winter Games ceremony includes snowfall on cue

The lighting of the Olympic flame officially opened the XIV Winter Games Wednesday with all its ceremony, pageantry, and a Yugoslavian precision performance gone technicolor for television.

Snow fell right on cue, giving the hills above Sarajevo the right winter wonderland touch. But the new snow created havoc on the competition slopes.

Kosevo Stadium was packed to capacity with 60,000 spectators for the 90 -minute extravaganza, kicked off with the parade of Olympic delegations from the 49 participating countries. Spectators paid from $11 to $27 to watch the opening of the Games in 34-degree temperatures. Some 2 billion others were to watch event on television.
