Chinese-British settlement on Hong Kong emerging

The outlines of a settlement on the future of Hong Kong are starting to emerge in talks between Britain and China, the British Broadcasting Corporation said Wednesday.

Reporting on the resumption of talks in Peking, the BBC said that under the current plan Britain would acknowledge China's sovereignty over Hong Kong while the Chinese would grant the colony special status and leave it unchanged for at least 50 years after 1997.

The BBC said some British administrators might be allowed to remain into the 21st century, something Britain has placed high on its list of priorities.

A joint statement from the talks was expected sometime today.
