4,000 unionists clash with British police

About 4,000 British trade unionists clashed with police Wednesday in the biggest challenge by organized labor to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's policy of trying to curb union powers.

The demonstration took place outside a northern England print works in defiance of the Conservative government's laws against mass picketing. At least 22 police and 12 pickets were injured.
