Strike at stamping plant may close 6 Chrysler units

The Chrysler Corporation said Wednesday a strike at a crucial stamping plant here will force six of its eight auto assembly plants to close by Friday, resulting in the layoffs of 21,000 nonstriking workers.

United Automobile Workers Local 122 and Chrysler were to resume negotiations Wednesday to end the Twinsburg strike, which began Tuesday. The walkout by the 3 ,200 workers immediately forced the closing of two other plants, where 6,300 employees work. The nonstriking plants were shut down because the Twinsburg factory makes front doors and underbodies for Chryslers.

Union officials indicated that even if an agreement were reached, it could be Monday before the Twinsburg plant reopens.
