Iran claims capture of strategic point

Iran said Monday its troops had captured the strategic Kalu Heights in northern Iraq and were closing in on the Iraqi border town of Penjwin. The national news agency Irna said the move was the second phase of an offensive against Kurdish rebels who Tehran says are fighting for Iraq. Penjwin lies almost due east of the major Iraqi oil center of Kirkuk. Irna said hundreds of Iraqis had been killed or wounded in the fighting.

Iraq said the latest Iranian offensive against its forces would be the last battle of the Gulf war and that ''the invaders'' would be crushed.
