Poet exiled by S. Africa granted asylum in US

Dennis Brutus, a poet and political activist exiled by South Africa, was granted asylum in the US. Federal Immigration Judge Irving Schwartz said Tuesday that Mr. Brutus's life would be endangered if he were forced to return to his homeland, Zimbabwe. The federal government has been trying to force Brutus to leave the country for two years because it said his work permit had expired. The government said it would appeal the ruling. Brutus teaches English at Northwestern University.
