Iran and the United States ended 21/2 years of negotiations sparked by the hostage crisis with Iran's payment of $419.5 million owed to the US Export-Import Bank. Iran had stopped making payments on its debt to the bank with the takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran in 1979. The US responded by freezing Iranian assets in the US.
