Tower decides not to run for reelection to Senate

Sen. John Tower (R) of Texas, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee , announced that he will not seek reelection in 1984. Several polls in Texas in recent months showed Mr. Tower faced an uphill battle for reelection, especially if he were engaged in a rematch with former Rep. Bob Kreuger (D), his 1978 opponent, whom he narrowly defeated.

Although Tower, who was first elected in 1961, had already raised $1.5 million for his reelection battle, heavy registration of new Hispanic voters in Texas during the past two years makes it increasingly difficult for any Republican to win election statewide. Mr. Tower reportedly had informed President Reagan of his decision 10 days earlier.
