Chile gets a Cabinet controlled by civilians

A civilian-dominated Cabinet was sworn in by Chile's President, Augusto Pinochet. It is his first major step toward easing 10 years of increasingly unpopular military rule.

The Cabinet shake-up brought in prominent right-wing politicians and members of former civilian governments. Nevertheless, opposition politicians called for a fourth mass protest today to demand an immediate return to democratic rule.
