The Navy paid $100 or more for items that were stocked in government storerooms at a price of 4 or 5 cents. This is an example of overpayments Pentagon auditors say are costing taxpayers millions of dollars a year. They say waste persists despite a previous audit that said the Navy was lax in making sure it got the best buy.
