Japan says Soviet envoy sent home for spying

Japan said Tuesday it had expelled a Soviet diplomat for illegally trying to acquire information on Japanese high technology. The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Soviet First Secretary Arkadyd Vinogradov had left Japan Sunday.

Also accused of the same offense was a Soviet engineer, Boris Kakoorin, who left Japan last year. The ministry said he has been forbidden to return to the country.
