Protesting students clash with French policemen

Police clashed with thousands of students who marched through central Paris to protest government plans for reforming education. Students at universities throughout France have gone on strike and staged demonstrations against plans they say would deprive university faculties of their independence, increase state control, and introduce unnecessary exams. Meanwhile, farmers pressed their own protest by breaking into slaughterhouses and burning imported meat. The farmers were angry over European Community policies that have flooded the French market with imported meat.
