General Motors said it would call 16,000 laid-off employees back to work, starting as early as May 9. GM president James McDonald credited the recall to incoming orders, which he said were at their highest level in three years. Earlier, GM had reported that its early April domestic auto sales rose more than 55 percent over last year's figure.
