US arms-control nominee criticized on Senate panel

President Reagan's nomination of Kenneth Adelman to head the US Arms Control and Disarmament Agency ran into severe criticism Thursday at a Senate confirmation hearing.

Assistant Senate Democratic leader Alan Cranston of California urged senators to reject the nomination. Several other members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said they had reservations about Mr. Adelman's lack of experience in arms control and opposition to past arms accords. The President nominated Mr. Adelman, deputy US ambassador to the United Nations, after firing Eugene Rostow from the job.
