Former envoy pledges to overthrow Sandinistas

The recently resigned Nicaraguan ambassador to Washington pledged from exile to work on overthrowing the leftist Sandinista government in Managua. Francisco Fiallos told reporters he had joined the Democratic Revolutionary Alliance, a broad-based group opposing the Sandinista regime. Mr. Fiallos said the Sandinistas imposed totalitarian rule in Nicaragua.

In a separate report, the Nicaraguan government accused Fiallos of embezzling nearly $670,000 from an embassy bank account in Washington. Foreign Minister Miguel D'Escoto told reporters Fiallos had pocketed the money that came from the sale last fall of grounds of the country's former embassy in Washington.
