Who's right?

''There's my way and the wrong way!'' was a whimsical saying in our family. And doesn't this often seem to be the case?

Sometimes we may feel that our way is the only way. Yet even if our way is nearest right, a self-righteous or unyielding attitude can lead to conflict. It has even led to wars between nations entrenched in their positions.

In a world that is growing more complex daily, there appear to be many ''right'' answers. From our point of view, we may know we are right. It is very probable that the ones with whom we seem in conflict are equally assured of the correctness of their positions and can justify them.

What can we do? We can be willing to turn humbly to God for the solution.

The Bible states, ''We have the mind of Christ.'' n1 We can pray to express the understanding and compassion of the Christ. This can be the basis for our decisionmaking.

Again, in Philippians we read, ''Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.'' n2 J. B. Phillips renders this passage, ''Let your attitude to life be that of Christ Jesus himself.'' Wasn't a key element of Jesus' attitude his understanding that he could do nothing by himself, that he always looked to God for spiritual power and guidance?

Where are we looking for answers? Are we looking to God or to people? If we suppose we are controlled by the beliefs of personal mortal minds, we will find conflict. But if we turn to God, the one di-vine Mind, we will discover answers that satisfy.

The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: ''No mortal mind has the might or right or wisdom to create or to destroy. All is under the control of the one Mind, even God.'' n3

From a human standpoint there may be many feasible alternatives. But if a solution isn't apparent, or if each of the parties involved insists he is ''right,'' we can look to a higher authority. We can turn to God as all-knowing Mind and be divinely guided to the solution that will bless all. We can let the divine Mind be expressed in us, recognizing the allness of God, good. And we can realize in prayer that the one Mind alone truly governs man.

When we are reasoning from this basis, we begin to see that the answer need not be battled out among many mortal minds, each striving to push its own case. Turning to God for the answer may open up a possibility no one has even considered. God doesn't take sides. He loves all his creation and perpetually governs it in accord with His law of good.

Our job, then, becomes one of listening for divine direction rather than second-guessing. God, Mind, by virtue of His perfect, wise control of His creation, is able to govern all our activities. But we need to let Him govern us by being willing to set aside our pet attitude, however justified, and by being willing to adopt a God-inspired one. As we do this, we can feel assured that, whatever the answer, it will bless everyone involved.

But don't be surprised if the answer comes to someone else! God is truly the Mind of each of us, the source of all right ideas. We need to humbly recognize this fact - to realize that good has one infinite source and can be perceived by all.
