Choosing apples

Apples differ widely in appearance, flesh, characteristics, seasonal availability, and suitability for different uses.

For good eating as fresh fruit, choose McIntosh, Ma-coun, Red and Golden Delicious, and Cortland. For cooking, use McIntosh, Baldwin, Cortland, and Golden Delicious.

For baking, select Rome, Northern Spy, Golden Delicious, and Cortland. For making pies, use Baldwin, Cortland, Northern Spy, and Golden Delicious.
