Presidential voting brings on violence in Sri Lanka

A state of emergency was declared in Sri Lanka Wednesday after sporadic violence erupted during the country's presidential election, a Defense Ministry spokesman said.

The spokesman gave no details of the disturbances but said that troops had been called out. The emergency powers were intended to prevent the violence spreading and to protect people and their property, he said.
