In a major study on the effects of school desegregation, researchers at Michigan State University found that students' achievement improved at all grade levels, but racial attitudes of parents, students and teachers generally did not.

The researchers concluded that one of the most important factors in understanding variations in both attitude and achievement was knowing the racial composition of the neighborhoods where people lived.
