Iraq will again attempt to end fighting with Iran

Iraqi military intelligence says Iranian forces are poised to strike deep into Iraqi territory and Iraq is launching a new initiative to bring an immediate end to the two-year-old war, the president of Iraq's National Assembly said Monday.

Naeem Haddad said the new peace bid, to be launched at an international conference of parliamentary deputies here this week, will call for an immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of all forces to internationally recognized boundaries. Mr. Haddad said that Iraq was prepared to negotiate directly with the Iranian authorities to end the conflict. Iraq initiated the hostilities to reinforce its claim to disputed territory.
