Machine-tool orders continue to slip

Orders for new machine tools placed during July were 14 percent below the previous month's level and 44 percent below the volume recorded in July 1981. The level of new machine tools shipped during July was down 39 percent in June and 32 percent compared with July of a year ago.Domestic contracts - machine tools bought by US companies - rose by 6 percent above June's orders.
