Poland warns of hard line on even minor protests

Polish authorities warned they would tolerate no more protest demonstrations - no matter how small - and stepped up police patrols to back up the claim.

Such warnings have recently been repeated almost daily, reflecting the martial law government's fears of possible disorder Aug. 31, the day on which the Solidarity union underground called for mass rallies to mark the union's second anniversary.
