Strike backing policemen brings Bombay to a halt
| Bombay
Bombay was brought to a virtual standstill Thursday by a general strike supporting striking policemen. Stores were looted and buses burned before security police opened fire and brought the city under control.
Union leaders, denouncing ''repressive government action'' against the policemen, called the general strike here in India's largest commercial center, with a population of 8 million. The police commissioner said that more than half of the 25,000-member police force had stopped work to back demands for higher pay, better housing, and food subsidies.
