France checking reports prisoners work on pipeline

The French government instructed its embassy in Moscow to investigate a report by a Frankfurt-based human rights organization that thousands of Soviet prisoners are working on the new Siberian gas pipeline.

A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry said the instruction was sent to Moscow following publication by a French newspaper of the report by the West German-based International Association for Human Rights.
