State Department post for former Monitor editor

President Reagan nominated John Hughes, since March the director of the Voice of America, to be the State Department spokesman.

Mr. Hughes, chosen for the job by new Secretary of State George P. Shultz, will succeed Dean Fischer. For 25 years Mr. Hughes was with The Christian Science Monitor, first as a foreign correspondent, and finally as editor.
