'The sunlight of Truth'

One of the joys of the English countryside is a glorious summer day. After the cold, dismal winter we all appreciate the blue sky and warm sunshine, birds singing and the scent of wildflowers. We revel in the peace and quiet.

Christian Science shows that peace and joy are spiritual qualities that can be expressed by each one of us every day, at any time of the year. Dark clouds can never obliterate the sun. Neither can the clouds of sickness, fear, lack, or any other discordant condition destroy our well-being, though they may seem to hide it temporarily.

Do we yearn for improved health, a better job, or a happier home life? We might then heed this promise of Christ Jesus: ''Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.'' n1 Wasn't Jesus talking about the inner peace that actually belongs to each one of us as God's offspring and that we experience when we think and act from a spiritual basis?

n1 John 14:27.

As we follow the Master's example of allegiance to the one God, of love and purity, we're able to rid ourselves of fear and frustration and to experience the peace that is rightfully ours. Christian Science helps us in this direction. It teaches us how, through prayer, to deepen our understanding of God as divine Truth and Love. Prayer, imbued with the spirit of the healing Christ, awakens us to the presence of God. It reveals our true nature to be His perfect child. As we come to understand God more spiritually, our confidence in His care grows, and we are able to conduct our affairs free from the overcast of tension and worry.

The power of Christ in human consciousness is like sunlight breaking through the clouds. This eternal healing power of God dispels fear and sickness as readily as sunlight banishes gloom. As our understanding of God and His Christ increases, we find that only good is truly present and active, despite appearances, and that clouds of evil are powerless to disrupt our spiritual sonship with God.

Should we be faced with a discordant bodily condition, we can prove our dominion over it because this dominion stems directly from God. It is the power of God, Truth, that heals. The operation of this healing power is explained by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. She writes, ''Christian Science brings to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates and purifies.'' Later in the same paragraph she continues, ''The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind.'' n2

I was able to prove this when I woke up one morning with a sore throat and felt feverish. I prayed and also studied the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings for some time. I strove to turn away from contemplating the physical disability and to keep my thought centered on the invigorating, purifying, harmonizing power of Truth. I put my trust in Truth, in the one divine Spirit, and actively refuted the belief that matter, Spirit's opposite, had the power or intelligence to cause inharmony by being inflamed or overheated. Very soon the results of this work became apparent. My temperature had returned to normal and the throat condition had vanished completely.

When we pray, not so much for material things or for a change of circumstances, but for a better understanding of God and of our actual, Godlike nature, wrong thinking and the ills it seems to bring are obliterated; healing results.

Although the sun is some ninety-three million miles distant from the earth, we never doubt that its warmth will reach us. How can we doubt that God, who is omnipresent, will forever be bestowing His infinite love and peace on us? DAILY BIBLE VERSE The sun shall be no more thy ligh by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the Lord shall be unto thee an ever- lasting light, and thy God thy glory. Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light. Isaiah 60: 19,20
