Stennis among winners in four state primaries

Results are in for the primary elections in four states.

John C. Stennis, who has represented Mississippi in the Senate since 1947, easily won renomination as the Democratic Party's candidate in the November general election. In the Republican primary, Haley Barbour, a Yazoo City lawyer, defeated state Highway Commissioner Bobby Richardson. Mr. Barbour won 74 per cent of the vote.

In New Mexico's race for the Democratic nomination to oppose GOP Sen. Harrison Schmitt, New Mexico Attorney General Jeff Bingaman defeated former Gov. Jerry Apodaca.

In West Virginia, conservative Rep. Cleve Benedict won the Republican nomination to oppose Senate Democratic leader Robert C. Byrd.

In South Dakota, state Sen. Mike O'Connor defeated former state Rep. Elvern Varilek in the Democratic primary for governor.
