Senator Williams gets 3 years, $50,000 fine
| Uniondale, N.Y.
Sen. Harrison J. Williams (D) of New Jersey was sentenced Tuesday to three years in prison and fined $50,000 for a bribery and conspiracy conviction resulting from the FBI's Abscam investigation. He could have received a maximum sentence of 15 years.
Williams, the only senator snared in the probe, also faces Senate expulsion hearings. He is only the third senator in US history to be convicted of a crime while still in office.
