Has the preeminent US black organization had enough of the ''Big Apple''?

The NAACP is seriously considering moving its headquarters out of New York City. Economics is the basis for the contemplated move -- rent is too high and so are other costs in midtown Manhattan. Another possibility is nearby New Jersey.

Neither top NAACP officials nor board members will discuss the problem, but the board does have a committee checking out possibilities. Several cities - Detroit, Memphis, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C., among them -- have offered inducements, including real estate, to lure the nation's most-influential civil rights group.
