Japan ready to hike arms budget by 7.7%

The Japanese Cabinet approved a 7.7 percent hike in its defense budget in response to US demands that Tokyo help counter a Soviet buildup in the Far East by boosting its military spending.

The $11.7 billion budget now goes to the Diet, or parliament, where approval is considered a sure thing.
