The popularity of winter fun in National Parks across the United States is on the rise. Snow camping, downhill and cross-country skiing, tobogganing, ice fishing, and ice skating are only some of the activities offered to visitors each winter. There are also guided nature walks and fireside programs.

Cross-country and downhill skiing are popular in Yosemite and Lassen Volcanic , as well as other national parks in California. Skiers in Lassen have splendid views of towering Lassen Peak, surrounded by evergreen forests and the park's hot springs.

Paradise, at Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington, with an average snowfall of 10 feet or more, has cross-country trails and huge supervised slide areas. At Mt.Rainier's neighbor, Olympic National Park, visitors can go winter fishing and take guided snowshoe walks.

At Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, near Chicago, the environmental education staff teaches local students about the special ways plants and animals adapt to changing weather.

At Saratoga National Historical Park in New York, visitors can take a gentle 5-mile cross-country loop through beautiful mountain country, complete with a skier's guide, which narrates a route through historic areas.

First Night 1982, the sixth annual New Year's Eve celebration in Boston, will officially begin with a public procession through the streets of Boston, a parade of giant puppets, masks, banners, and bands. It will begin at 5:30 at the Hynes Auditorium, then culminate with a pageant on the Boston Common at 6:30. In the evening more than 100 performances will be presented to the public, culminating in a grand fireworks display.

The First Night 1982 program consists of indoor performances of theater, film , dance, music, poetry, mime, storytelling, and martial arts at 33 locations in Boston. Outdoor events will include laser projections and large-scale video projections.

Buttons and tickets may be purchased at Bostix at Faneuil Hall Marketplace; the Boston Common Visitor Information Booth; the Berklee Performance Center; the Loeb Drama Center in Cambridge; at Brigham's stores; or at the door of most performance locations.
