Trouble ahead for Greece in seeking new EC terms

Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou faces an uphill struggle in his bid to negotiate a new deal for Greece in the European Community, EC officials say. Greece, with more than 20 percent inflation and a fragile industrial sector, wants more cash and greater independence from Brussels. Mr. Papandreou has threatened to hold a referendum on Greece's continued membership in the Community, but this seems unlikely to wring major concessions from other EC governments, officials say. The possibility that Greece could become the first country to pull out of the 10-nation community is being taken seriously, they say.
