Why are California farmers attacking the Medfly with gusto? Check out California's crop statistics for 1980. The California crop and livestock report for 1980 shows the Golden State's exports abroad increased 43 percent over 1979 to $4 billion. Twenty-five percent of California's crops were sold abroad in 1980 -- up several percentage points from 1979. The state's top 1980 export continued to be cotton, valued at more than $1 billion. Second place among California's top 20 agricultural exports was almonds.

But the fastest growing sector is the specialty crops including almonds. apricots, dates, peaches, prunes, walnuts, garlic, and ladino clover seed -- many of which are juicy targets for munching Medfliesm
