Chamber traces surge in worker benefits

American workers in the nearly three decades ending in the 1970s enjoyed a spectacular growth in the benefits paid by their employers, a historical review of data published by the US Chamber of Commerce shows.

The value of benefits, in dollars per year per employee, grew from $644 in 1951 to $5,560 in 1979, as employers added new benefits, increased their duration, or were faced with higher legally required payments such as the social security tax.
