Riley, drums; Kenny Burrell, guitar. GALAXY 5129 -- One can't listen to Garland's broad, two-handed chords and punchy comping without feeling affection for those early Miles Davis days, when his rendition of "Billy Boy" was such a new, exciting sound. And the sound is still intact. It's just that everyone sounds tired on this recording. At first it seems like just a very relaxed session, but then you realize that something is missing. What is it? It's hard to say, but it's still an enjoyable, listenable album, with some good solos by Garland and company. Some liner notes on the back of the album would have been nice, too, instead of just blank white space.
