New US postal service contract averts strike

The US Postal Service said Tuesday it had reached a $4.8 billion, three-year tentative settlement with its two largest unions. A half-million men and women who sort and tote America's mail had kept working without a contract as marathon negotiations continued on an hour-by-hour basis to head off a threatened strike.
