The number of black college students has nearly doubled in the past decade, the Census Bureau reports. About 1 million blacks between the ages of 14 to 34 were enrolled in college last October, said a preliminary report on social and economic characteristics of students. That compared with about 522,000 in 1970. College enrollment of all ages was 11.4 million, up 2.8 million in 10 years. The increase was due partly to a record 84 percent jump in numbers of part-time students. Full-time enrollment rose only 24 percent.
Overall enrollment of students at all school levels fell, reflectin g a decrease in the birthrate.
