Japan says ship incident perils meeting with US

Japan told the United States that their summit meeting next month could be wrecked by the row over the collision of a US nuclear submarine and a Japanese freighter, which sank.With the April 9 accident fast becoming a diplomatic crisis, Foreign Minister Masayoshi Ito said the meeting could not succeed if Washington failed to come up with a satisfactory explanation of the sinking. He was speaking during a meeting with Adm. Robert Long, commander of US forces in the Pacific, who arrived here early Thursday, officials said.

Admiral Long told Mr. Ito that the US Seventh Fleet had been instr ucted to complete a thorough investigation within 30 days.
