Top Pentagon brass are said to have been toying with the idea of building the Trident nuclear submarine abroad. The reason: deep disenchantment with construction standards at the US embassy plant in Connecticut.

But if the plan sounds unpatriotic, it may also be illegal. Rep. David Emery (R) of Maine has written to tell Secretary Weinberger that US law prohibits the use of appropriated funds for construction of any naval vessel in foreign shipyards.

Emery just happens to represent the district that includes the Bath Iron Wo rks, another source of US warships.m
