Nearly 200 Believed killed in South African flooding

In one of the worst natural disasters in South Africa's history, a wall of water ripped through the farming town of Laingsburg, drowning scores of people and leaving thousands homeless. Police said up to 190 people were feared drowned in flash floods that burst dams, washed out bridges, and stranded trains. The entire southern karoo region, a normally arid area the size of Ohio , was declared a disaster area by Prime Minister Pieter Botha when the usually sedate Buffalo River, fueled by three days of heavy rains, burst its banks.Three dams also burst, adding to the torrent.
