UN Special Envoy Olof Palme secured agreement between Iran and Iraq for the safe passage of ships trapped 10 weeks in the Shatt al Arab waterway by the Gulf war.

". . . Mr. Palme informed the secretary-general that an agreement in principle had been reached with his interlocutors concerning the free passage out of the area of commercial ships at present immobilized in the Shatt al Arab, " a UN statement said. "A number of points of a technical nature are now being clarified so that the necessary arrangements can be made in order to proceed with the evacuation."
