European panel OKs aid for Portuguese economy

The European Commission agreed on a $385 million financial aid package for Portugal before its entry into the European Community. The package consists of long-term financing arm, and $175 million in nonrepayable cash aid, commission sources said. The grants will be used to prepare backward areas of the Portuguese economy for the country's planned entry into the Common Market by 1983.
